When Andy Farrell of Cedar Painting and Decorating in Leicester was asked to redecorate the stunning Victorian Orangery at The Kilworth House Hotel in North Kilworth, he was faced with a dilemma. The premium oil based eggshell coating that had always been used in the past to protect and decorate the ornate joinery of the star listed building was no longer available, having been withdrawn from the market as a result of legislation to reduce VOC levels.
Andy needed a high quality alternative exterior coating system to deliver a long lasting finish in exactly the same colour that had been used before, with the same subtle sheen. Above all else it had to offer a high level of weather protection for the carefully restored timbers of The Orangery. Given the building’s exposed south facing aspect, Andy needed a flexible coating that could accommodate expansion and contraction of the substrates without flaking or peeling, and one which would retain its colour, even in intense UV light.
Having previously used the Sandtex Trade Flexigloss X-tra system on several occasions where clients wanted a high gloss finish that could ‘flex’ with the substrate, Andy decided to put his trust in another product in the Sandtex Trade range, namely Eggshell X-tra.
“I’ve done a lot of work at The Kilworth House Hotel and they’re one of my biggest commercial clients,” said Andy. “The Orangery, which houses an elegant restaurant, is the hotel’s key architectural feature so it was obviously critical that I opted for a paint system that would meet their exacting standards. I chose Sandtex Trade Eggshell X-tra because I’d always achieved such good results with Flexigloss in the past and I know how well that particular system stands up to extremes of weather and changes in temperature.”
“There are so many colours in the Sandtex Trade colour collection, it wasn’t difficult to find an exact colour match to the previous paint shade,” said Andy. “Leicester Crown Decorating Centre tinted and mixed a sample tin of Eggshell X-tra for me and I painted up a trial area of the Orangery that could be seen by the hotel owners and managers before I went ahead with the full job. Preparing the trial area not only reassured my client that I’d made the right choice of, it also put my mind at rest that the two-coat maintenance system I’d quoted for would achieve the desired results.”
Everyone approved the colour and finish achieved in the trial area, so Andy was able to proceed with the job. After washing down the woodwork and filling areas in need of repair, he applied a coat of Sandtex Trade Flexible Primer Undercoat. “This was very clearly a premium product,” he said, “it was thick, but it flowed off the brush really well and provided a very good base.”
This was followed by a single coat of Sandtex Trade Eggshell X-tra. “I needn’t have had any concerns over the finish,” said Andy, “On this particular project, a single topcoat proved sufficient. The opacity and coverage were excellent and the eggshell was a pleasure to work with. I was really pleased with the results.”
“It’s great to know that wherever exterior woodwork needs a high level of flexible protection from the elements there’s a Sandtex Trade solution to meet the client’s needs,” concluded Andy.
“Whether they want traditional full gloss or a more subtle and contemporary finish, with Flexigloss X-tra and Eggshell X-tra I can offer them the sheen level they prefer and the reassurance of longlasting performance.”
